After taking a few months off and spending some time with my family and fiancee, it's now time to jump back into the fray. I'm primarily looking for jobs in the Vancouver and Calgary areas but I'm also considering making a serious go at telecommuting. Most of my recent experience has been in the identity 2.0 space but I'm very interested in exploring new industries and problems.

So, if you have a good problem or need a deep thinker for your team, keep me in mind.

So, without much ado, I'm no longer with Cogneto and am joining my two friends Andy Dale and John Bradley to bring solid, usable, user-centric identity and authentication to the world under the mighty rubric of Wingaa.

As is often the case, transitioning from one job to another was rockier than it first looked. It was full of bitter-sweet moments mixed liberally with some sad moments and a huge swelling of excitement and hope for the future. I've gained a pile of insight and a good set of lessons to take to my next venture. I try when I leave a job to figure out what the best lesson was and I think that, in retrospect, we didn't have enough transparency and that should have been a warning sign. We had a very smart group of people who were kept from seeing or helping with problems because they didn't know about them. That's my key lesson from this job - transparency is a hallmark of a good company.

Podcast: What is a cognitive biometric?

Do you know what a passthought is? We didn't either - until we recorded this podcast. To start off the new year with a bang, the Tech Buzzwords podcast from WhatIs.com tackles cognitive biometrics, a fast growing new field used in authentication in the finance industry and beyond. To learn more about "cognometrics," Assistant Site Editor Alex Howard interviewed Patrick Audley, the CTO of bleeding-edge risk adaptive software provider Cogneto.

I had just finished an investor relations trip in Europe for Cogneto. It was fun but extremely busy - one of those non-stop business trips where days are filled with meetings and evenings with... more meetings. We stayed at an amazing hotel (especially by London's standards) near Shepherd's Market in Mayfair. It was a short walk to our UK office off Berkeley Square and generally close to most other fun bits of London. We walked all over, paid homage to the Apple Store, ate in Soho, rode the tube. All very British and fun.

Managed to have some great meals too! That was a shock - last time I was in the UK, good food was a scare commodity. I had my first Steak and Kidney pie which was amazing. We spent quite a bit of time hanging out at Adrian's private club Morton's. Very nice place to sit back for a few drinks after at day full of work.

We managed to spend a day in Paris though all I saw of the city was from the cab windows between venues. Much traveling later saw us in Dresden for the weekend.

Dresden was a surprise in many ways with it's juxtaposition of beautiful Saxon architecture and blocky communist buildings. There were tourists everywhere in the Old City but after we moved away from the main areas we found quite a few gems including "Al Capone's" Italian restaurant on Aleunstrabe. Overall a very nice city to hang out in, certainly one of the cheapest parts of Europe I've been in for good food, excellent beer, and swish accommodation.

Say it ain't so! Okay, maybe the pies were store bought and dragged home from "Safeway" but, they were still epicurian fare for a couple of "Highlands" ruffians.

Copyright © 2008
This feed is for personal, non-commercial use only.
The use of this feed on other websites breaches copyright. Axion was my first real job and I love it. I was a chance to grow into a management position and run some slick hardware at a scale that was unavailable to me before. I really enjoyed working with Tom Lavin and the rest of the crew and honestly couldn't have asked for a better introduction to startups.

Here I learned so many of my formative career lessons (including my not-so-fun introduction to VC takeovers *lol*). This was a very fun time in my life and I'll always cherish these days for their youthful excitement and the deep feeling that I can accomplish anything that I carry with me today.

This paper has been years in the making, and though I was only involved towards the end it was still a lot of fun. The paper evaluates several different methods for performing multiple sequence alignments (MSA). MSAs are used in biology to determine how similar several genes or proteins are. This is useful, for instance, to determine how closely related genes are among different species. Alternatively, MSAs can be used to compare different genes or proteins within a single species to find similar functions. MSAs are useful in other scientific fields, such as linguistics, where you need to determine the similarity between a number of sequences of things (like sentences of words).

What a BLAST! We both had a really great time at the Symposium. The lectures were great (even if they were a little too kinase heavy) and it was really fun to hang out in a social setting with people I work near everyday. Hearing everyone talk about their work during the lectures was really great too.

On Saturday, Elizabeth and I took a hike in the wilderness and met a very cool retiree who belongs to the clan that owns all the land around Pitlochry. We chatted for the better part of a half hour as we walked back together and had a most enjoyable time. That night was the Ceilidh, a Scottish dance that resembles <shiver> square dancing. Afterwards came the quiz session; a cross between a drunken game show and a game of Trivial Pursuit. We came in 5th but still had a great time!

All in all a really good weekend. The only thing it lacked was sleep *lol*

I discovered my very own Cisco IOS bug.. Hooray.. After weeks of have network address translation problems on our new Cat6509, Chris and I found a new bug in Cisco’s operating system... Ick. Needless to say this meant much pain until we worked around it by setting up a BSD box to handle the NAT Wink.

In addition to the bug, we also discovered a flaw in how Cisco implements NAT. Essential NAT (or overloaded many-to-one translation) works by hiding several machines behind a router. All conversations go through the router who remembers who on the inside is talking to who on the outside. From the outside (in this instance, the rest of the Internet) it appears as if all the conversations are with the router and from the inside (our local network) it looks normal.

It’s a good trick and normally provides a reasonable level of security because the outside world can’t connect directly to the machines behind NAT. In theory. In the IOS implementation it seems that the last machine to make a connection out gets all traffic to the router’s overloaded address that doesn’t match an active translation. Basically it boils down to a random chance that an attacker can hit any machine behind the NAT. Sure it’s harder to exploit than a non-NAT network; but then Cisco really should be dropping those packets like any sane implementation of NAT.

We found this bug when we firewalled the NAT to protect against this flaw in IOS, we also turned on IP inspection (our in non-Cisco terms: stateful firewalling). This is what caused the fatal bug in IOS and left us with a router that rebooted every half hour. Ick. Apparently the rest of the Cisco users haven’t noticed that NAT is brain dead in IOS and haven’t tried to firewall it. Cisco is working on a fix but it will be a while; hence the BSD box.

It's been a fun month at work! Below is a picture of my new Cisco 6509. It's been a blast to play with and poke around. It's nice to have good hardware to use and network planning is always.

On the software side I've been writing two software packages that shall be appearing in my code gallery soon. Submit_All is a package that allows biologists to submit a protein or DNA sequence and have it analysed by many programs at once on our cluster. The results are presented on a unified page and are cross-referenced. The second thing that I've been working on lately is a program to display sequences aligned with graphs and annotations. Good looking sequence displays are very lacking at the moment so I wanted to made something that will look pretty (hence the name Pretty_Seq *grin*). You can have a look below at the image of Pretty_Seq and the archive of Submit_All and see how I'm doing.

[CALLAN,Chris Allan] who I worked with at [GT003,Group Telecom] has come out to join the University working as a guru in the Light Microscopy lab. It's cool to have someone from home to go out with. He's been staying with Elizabeth and I for the last few weeks until he gets a place. Canadian world domination proceeds a pace...

This month promises to be fun at work!

Working in Academia was more satisfying in many ways than working in [STARTUPS,startups]. Most of the people who work in research were smart, well informed, and enjoy their work (Elizabeth and I thought this was because the pay was half that of the private sector, so anyone who doesn't like it gets a job there elsewhere).

I really enjoyed working in the [BIOINFORM001,Bioinformatics Dept.] and had great coworkers. This was the first time in all my career when I could truly say that I enjoyed everyone I worked with.

Seminars were particularly enjoyable and it was always easy to find people talking passionately about things they love.
